Church Teachers College

Church Teachers College Began in September 1965 as Mandeville Teachers' College, which at that time only had 75 students, 51 of them are female students. This educational institution was established with the blessing and authority of the Rt. Rev. Percival Gibson, then Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Jamaica.

History Staff College

 * Mr. Geralt R. Jones of Wales, served as Acting Principal first.

* Mrs. Sue Jones, wife of Mr. Geralt R. Jones, a music teacher.


* Deaconess Winnie Hoilett, who later became Pastor Winnie Bolle


* Mrs. Joan Swaby, who teaches Spanish and English.


* Mrs. Bachelor Phyllis, who taught Home Economics.


* Mr. Kenneth Thaxter, the Lay Reader in the Anglican Church, who teaches English, Social Studies, History and Physical Education.


* Rev. Orland Lindsay, who served as the principal permanent College 1967-1970 period. He later became Archbishop of the West Indies.


* Rev. William Murray, a replacement Rev. Orland Lindsay, who served from 1970 to 1978 period. He later became Bishop of Mandeville.


College starts with 25 preservice teachers who emphasize education in the Basic Program and 50 in the secondary program. As an educational institution when it is experiencing a period of growth, increasing the number of Teachers Secondary College and eventually became the sole provider of educational institutions on the island which focuses on teacher training for the age group of 12 and 17 years.


Then, the College began training on Post-Certificate students in both Primary and Secondary areas were trained. And since the early 90s, the College also has provided training for university graduates who wish to pursue a professional qualification with Diploma in Teacher Education.


From the beginning, the College has been a member of the Joint Council of Teacher Education (JBTE) at the University of the West Indies which establishes the program and expressed his Diploma program. And to this day, with all its facilities and infrastructure, the College was in a right track to begin to prepare students for a degree in Secondary Education.


By the early history which only has about 75 students, today, it is estimated Church Teachers College has a population of more than 400 students. In an effort to provide the best service, has recently College has introduced a new program that Early Childhood Education in the curriculum and are now providing training for teachers both in Secondary Education and Early Childhood Education and Primary special Spanish program.


Church Teachers College also has several facilities to support student activities, including the Evening Institute who prepare community members to take the exam the Caribbean Examination Council (CXC). In addition, there are also state-of-the-art Computer Labs in training that prepares teachers to teach computer skills in schools and to integrate ICT in their methodology. And the existence of such facilities, they also provide an opportunity for community members to get computer training.


There is a program that has been designed by the Church Teachers College for teachers who already holds a Diploma of Teaching, which offers the B.Sc. in Primary and Early Childhood Education. Where the program was held on the cooperation Church Teachers College-Temple University in the USA.


Over the past 40 years and for his dedication to education for teachers, making Church Teachers College has received many awards and honors academic achievement, including has won awards for its performance in Mathematics, English and other subject areas in the final examinations JBTE . And the achievements that has produced J.J. Mills scholars, and graduates who have proceeded to excel in higher University Degrees and work in Universities in Jamaica, Canada, the United States of America, the United Kingdom and elsewhere.


A number of outstanding old student has been appointed Head of the school and perform very well. A number of others have become a minister of religion, lawyers, etc., and holds a very responsible position in Jamaica and the wider world.


In addition, many alumni of the Church Teachers College who also has become an important and famous people in the world, including among those who have a good performance and achievement has been appointed as the Principal. In addition, there are also those who currently hold strategic positions in their respective fields, such as a minister of religion, lawyers, etc.


Perhaps, among the many achievements, there is one very valuable pride that occurred in 1967, at which time, when schools in Portland and Hanover closed due to lack of teachers, students who have graduated from Teachers College Church: Mandeville in voluntarily returned to reopen the schools that have been closed down and gave hope that a brighter future for the community when it was lost due to the closure of the school.


Today, the Church Teachers College has Remained tightly organized with an alert Board of Management chaired by the Bishop of Mandeville, a very gifted and talented Academic Staff, and a co-operative Administrative and Ancillary Staff.


As a form of concern, for many years, through its clubs and societies, and through its Physical Education Department, the Church Teachers College has continued to offer assistance to the Children's Homes, the mentally and physically challenged, and schools roomates need help to organize and run sporting events.
