Columbia University Medical Center (CUMC) is an academic health centers and one campus at New York Presbyterian Hospital. CUMC including Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, the College of Dental Medicine, the School of Nursing and the Mailman School of Public Health, as well as Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital, New York State Psychiatric Institute, Audubon Biomedical Research Park, and many other institutions.

CUMC was built in 1920 on the site of Hilltop Park, the home stadium one-time New York Yankees. Land where CUMC stands was donated by Edward Harkness, who also has contributed much to the development cost of the original campus.


CUMC formerly known as Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center (CPMC) specially set up to house both medical school and Presbyterian Hospital, which is the first academic medical center in the world. Change the name of this organization occurred in 1997 which followed the formation of the New York Presbyterian Hospital, at which time the merger between the two health centers, each of which is affiliated with the Ivy League universities, namely Columbia Presbyterian at Columbia University, and New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center, Cornell University Weill Cornell Medical College.


With extensive campus of about 20 acres that includes several blocks, especially between Road 165 and 169 West from Riverside Drive to Audubon Avenue, in the neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City Washington Heights, and with an annual budget which reached about $ 3 billion, Columbia University Medical Center (CUMC) providing global leadership in scientific research, health and medical education, and patient care.

CUMC is affiliated with the Harlem Hospital Center and the Isabella Geriatric Center, the which are located in Manhattan, as well as Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown, New York and Arnot Ogden Medical Center in Elmira, New York. CUMC's major teaching hospital NewYork-Presbyterian affiliates are Hospital and the New York State Psychiatric Institute, both of which are shared with CUMC campus.


Columbia Doctors

 CUMC plays a major role in global health issues, particularly in capacity building. Approximately 30 percent of the student P & S, participate in various activities and international programs, and nearly 50 percent of third-year dental students to participate in global health externships school. Nursing schools have research and teaching partnerships with schools and clinics are located in Bangladesh, Dominican Republic, Hungary, Ireland, Israel, Norway, Portugal, South Africa, and Taiwan.

P & S

 Established in 1767, was the first school that awarded the MD degree in 1770. And to this day, the legacy of the P & S is to continuously innovate. Major curriculum changes implemented in 2009, reflecting the practice of medicine changes that occur 21st century. Bassett New Line train students for the work of primary care in a rural environment. P & S is one of the medical school with the most intensive research, and student MCAT scores and grade-point average among the highest in the country.

The College of Dental Medicine (CDM)

 Established in 1916. Nearly 20 percent of dental school application go to Columbia, which has one of the Dental Admissions national average value of the highest Test (DAT). Dental faculty and students collaborate with colleagues from different disciplines at CUMC and around the world to incorporate a variety of clinical issues, research, and public policy related to oral health problems. CDM is also the largest service provider for primary and specialty oral health in Northern Manhattan community of Harlem, Washington Heights, and Inwood.

Columbia University School of Nursing

 Established in 1892 CuSn was the first school that awarded a master's degree in clinical nursing specialty program in 1956. And in 2005, the program nurse-midwife who celebrate the birthday of the 50th. These schools offer combined undergraduate / master of science, various master's degree, doctor of nursing practice (DNP), PhD, and a joint degree in nursing / public health and nursing / business. The research center at the school is the Center for Children and Families, Center for Evidence-Based Practice in Underserved, Health Policy Center, and the Center for Interdisciplinary Research to Prevent Infections.

Mailman School of Public Health

 Founded in 1922, has programs in more than 100 countries around the world and is a leader in HIV / AIDS, mental public health, environmental health, global health, and urban health. Nearly 40 percent of Mailman's full-time faculty members hold joint appointments in other interdisciplinary or Columbia University departments, schools, and centers. The school's 20 research centers include the International Center for AIDS Care and Treatment, the Center for Infection and Immunity, and the National Center for Disaster Preparedness.

CUMC has pride in conjunction with the community around Washington Heights, many of whose members have roots in the Dominican Republic and other Spanish-speaking countries. CUMC Office of Government and Community Affairs serves as the primary liaison between the Medical Center and the community. Currently, CUMC has more than 40 research and clinical programs active in Northern Manhattan, including Harlem, Washington Heights, and Inwood.
